Consulting Software Engineer (Contractor) at CodeDay Remote (United States; Canada; India) About CodeDay & CodeDay Labs Program
There's a place in tech for everyone. CodeDay is a non-profit providing welcoming, hands-on opportunities for under-served students to explore a future in tech and beyond.
CodeDay's Labs program is a 100% online tech internship for anyone. Tens of thousands of talented CS students attend affordable local colleges rely on internships to gain real-world knowledge and demonstrate the skills they need to get a job. But most companies focus their hiring on brand-name schools. We help these students get real-world opportunities by pairing them with an industry mentor to work on a real-world, open-source Computer Science project.
About the Role
Sometimes students aren't able to unblock themselves without guidance. Students are matched with industry professional mentors, but they're only available for a few hours a week. You'll help them get unblocked through pair programming sessions (scheduled in advance and based on your availability):
Provide assistance in software engineering (architecture, coding, debugging) to students as they work toward making a contribution on a popular open-source project.
Enter a note for each student you meet with.
You don't have to be "available" at all times. Students will set up calls based on a Calendly (which links to your calendar + general availability guardrails), so there's a lot of flexibility in schedule. No meetings will pop up suddenly, you'll always have at least 4 hours of notice.
Requirements
Great English skills.
Available during some US hours. Help is particularly needed in Pacific time afternoon/evening.
This is a good fit for college students with significant experience working on your own projects.
Compensation
You'll be paid as a contractor, $30 per hour for time spent assisting students. People in this role typically host 5-20 hours of sessions per month.
You're also welcome to do this as a volunteer job, if you'd like to help us get more students into the program.
