JOB SUMMARY

Reporting to the Manager, Safety and Business Continuity, the Health and Safety Advisor assists in developing, leading, implementing, and measuring AGLC’s Health and Safety (H&S) Program in accordance with legislation, policies and standards. This position is first point of contact for all H&S matters and provides expertise and guidance to stakeholders to ensure quick resolution and reduction of potential safety risks.
As the Health and Safety Advisor, you will participate in program management for H&S initiatives, auditing of existing practices and processes, supporting the resolution of complex H&S issues, and communicating and updating H&S information for the purpose of supporting AGLC’s mandate of creating and maintaining a healthy and safe workplace for all employees.
In this role you will provide leadership in developing and maintaining the H&S program elements including the policies, standards, procedures and practices required for effective implementation. You will be responsible to respond to health and safety incidents and near misses, to identify causes and systemic deficiencies, and to support business areas in the identification of corrective/preventive actions to prevent recurrence. Promoting AGLC’s health and safety culture and continuous improvement within the workplace is a key accountability.
Your subject matter knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety legislation, incident management (investigation techniques and causal analysis), hazard management (identification, assessment and control), emergency preparedness and response planning, management system auditing, health awareness and protection, health and safety metrics (lagging and leading indicators) and analysis, and current issues within H&S will help you be successful. You will possess the demonstrated ability to work independently, innovatively, and collaboratively with stakeholders and to apply critical thinking skills to arrive at effective solutions. Your strength is being capable of building strong and productive partnerships with internal and external partners.
SKILLS & ABILITIES
Minimum of a University degree in related field plus two (2) years related experience or related two-year diploma plus four (4) years directly related experience.
Must have a recognized safety-related designation, such as the Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST); Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation would be considered an asset.
Knowledge and understanding of applicable Alberta OHS legislation (Act, regulations, and Code), evaluation of health and safety management systems (i.e., the Certificate of Recognition COR audit process), and industry best practices.
Working knowledge of health and safety metrics, including leading and lagging indicators, and generating and analyzing statistical information would be considered an asset.
Excellent verbal and written communication to effectively advise employees and people leaders.
Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills to develop and implement safety solutions.
Promotes and fosters a safety culture within AGLC through positive safety awareness and education.
Project management experience would be considered an asset.
Previous experience working in a unionized environment would be considered an asset.
Capable of building strong and collaborative partnerships with internal and external partners.
