Job Description
A Software Engineer i is responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining SCADA systems for industrial automation processes. The Software Engineer will be responsible for the design, implementation, and maintenance of SCADA systems that monitor and control various industrial processes.
The ideal candidate is familiar with systems integration using a variety of technologies. It is not expected that they will have experience with all of them. A motivated and self-driven candidate with a background in a variety of industrial automation technologies or a desire to learn about them will be the best fit. .
What You Will Be Doing
• Design and develop SCADA systems using various software suites, including InTouch, System Platform, AVEVA/Wonderware Historian, OSI PI, etc.
• Configure and program SCADA software to monitor and control various industrial processes, such as manufacturing, energy, mining, and utilities.
• Collaborate with clients, project managers, and other stakeholders to understand system requirements and develop solutions that align with their needs.
• Install, configure, and troubleshoot SCADA software and related components such as PLCs, ensuring proper integration with existing infrastructure.
• Integrate SCADA systems with historians (e.g., OSI PI, Wonderware, AVEVA) for data acquisition, analysis, and reporting purposes.
• Develop custom scripts using scripting languages (e.g., JavaScript, Python, VBScript, etc.) to enhance system functionality and performance.
• Conduct system testing and commissioning to ensure the accurate functioning of SCADA systems, addressing any issues or discrepancies that arise.
• Perform system upgrades and modifications, adhering to industry best practices and ensuring minimal disruption to operations.
• Provide technical support and guidance to end-users, troubleshooting system issues, and offering timely resolutions.
• Participate in training to stay updated with the latest advancements and trends in SCADA technologies.
What You Need for this Position
• BS in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent experience.
• Beginner to intermediate knowledge of SCADA systems and integrating with different data sources.
• Experience with any SCADA software is okay. Note that we usually work on AVEVA (formerly Wonderware) software products including System Platform, Operations Control, InTouch, PI, MES, Advanced and Predictive Analytics.
• Knowledgeable in computer networking architectures, topologies, and hardware.
• Knowledge of at least one programming language (i.e. Python, Java, C#, vbScript, etc.).
• Knowledge of databases.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a keen attention to detail.
• On site / Travel requirements
o Stand for multiple hours and lift 40 lbs.
• Willingness to travel to customer sites if needed. Most work is currently remote, but engineers may need to travel up to 25% in the future for customer meetings or deployments.
Nice to Haves
• Proven experience as a SCADA Engineer, with a focus on AVEVA/Wonderware System Platform and OSI PI.
• Familiarity with OSI PI architecture, data modeling, and integration with SCADA systems.
• Experience with identifying and implementing automation to improve user experience (UX).
• Experience with system integration using a variety of data access, including JSON, REST, and XML.
• Ability to set up SQL databases to capture data streams and create custom SQL queries.
• Create or modify PLC programs using Structured Text, Function Block Diagrams, and Ladder Logic.
• Experience with self-managing multiple project priorities and deliverables.
• Experience creating and modifying SCADA/HMI screens, alarms, and reports.
• Experience in programming languages such as JavaScript, Visual Basic, or C#.
• Familiar with operational data historians (e.g., AVEVA, Wonderware, OSI PI, etc.).
• Experience configuring and troubleshooting industry standard communication protocols such as Modbus, OPC UA/DA, DNP3, and TCP/IP.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and clients.
