Overview of role:
Our team is responsible for building zero to onesoftware products to provide efficiencies for WestJetters at the airport. After a successful launch we work with our stakeholders to scale the products. We aim to make our airport team members' work life easier so they can provide the service our guests expect. Our team was formed in 2023 and since then we have developed three products with more to come in 2025. We are looking for a Senior Developer to join our small but impactful team of developers. The Senior Developer delivers and integrates software to form a complete service. This role will be a mentor for our intermediate and junior developers and work with other teams within WestJet to help develop sound standards and practices. We are looking for a full stack developer that is experienced and happy to collaborate closely with Product, QA, Data Engineering, DevOps, cybersecurity, infrastructure, and product engineering teams. This position requires an energetic self-starter with a strong work ethic and willingness to learn and contribute to a fast-paced environment. Excellent communication skills, the ability to collaborate with others, and the ability to lead through influence are essential.
Key deliverables include:
Actively and consistently support all efforts to simplify and enhance systems that support the digital functions of the company
Design and document APIs, leveraging a standard API documentation framework (OpenAPI)
Leverage existing API design patterns or modify them to maintain organization consistency
Leads development of new software technology and initiatives which may include, but not limited to code architecture, development, unit testing and other requirements
Automate and document troubleshooting of production applications
Implement and design CI/CD pipelines to automate delivery of our APIs
Ensure that all APIs are fully tested in an automated framework, including functional and performance tests
Focus API solution delivery to use cloud-based solutions
Actively participate and provide technical expertise for the creation, implementation and ongoing evolution of WestJet's design and development methodologies, coding standards and style guidelines
Contribute to the developer community
Provide technical leadership, coach, and mentor your team
Promote knowledge sharing and adoption of best practices
Advise on the right way to apply standards and methods, ensuring compliance and maintain technical responsibility for all the stages and iterations of a software development project
Provide technical advice to stakeholders and set the team-based standards for programming tools and techniques
Leads workshops, presentations, and training that provide skill and knowledge development for the team
Translate logical designs into physical designs.
Produce detailed designs and document work using required standards, methods, and tools, including prototyping tools where appropriate.
Leads reviews of own work and reviews of colleagues' work
Document system components, related interfaces and provide input into preparing release notes
Work with operational partners to ensure the supportability of new features/products and to provide timely technical support and fixes to production applications
Coordinate build activities across systems, undertakes and supports integration testing activities
Experience and Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience
8+ years of experience in all phases of software development
5+ years focused on backend development using Java
3+ years of experience leading and mentoring a team
Excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills
Expert-level experience in developing web applications using Java and Spring Framework (or related)
Expertise in RESTful web services using AJAX, JSON
Expertise in a version control system such as Subversion and GIT
Expertise in IDE software such as IntelliJ or Eclipse
Experience developing web applications using HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Vue.js
Experience with Azure, AWS, or Google Cloud is beneficial in this role
Knowledge of build automation tools such as Jenkins and Azure DevOps pipelines is an asset
Practical understanding of iterative, agile development methods, processes, and techniques such as Scrum and Kanban
Airline experience is an asset
Sabre Web Services experience is an asset
