This role provides engineering and asset management expertise to support the Engineering Manager - Control & Electrical Systems in achieving strategic and tactical business goals. You will develop and implement technical support information and guidance to manage and safeguard functional safety systems within the Mercury Generation portfolio. In this role you will be joining a team of 11 engineers, all of who enjoy collaborating, sharing their knowledge and mentoring each other. This team is spread across both our Rotorua and Hamilton sites, all in close proximity to our geothermal and hydro stations. Based in Rotorua or Hamilton, you will provide engineering and management technical expertise to support the Engineering Manager to deliver strategic and tactical business objectives at an asset level. The Specialist Engineer - Functional Safety provides engineering and asset management expertise to support the Engineering Manager - Control & Electrical Systems in achieving strategic and tactical business goals. It involves developing and implementing technical support information and guidance to manage and safeguard functional safety systems within the Mercury Generation portfolio. Key Responsibilities Include: Serve as the leading engineering authority for functional safety assets. Ensure compliance with functional safety standards and proactive safety management. Design safety systems, conduct risk assessments and hazard analyses. Verify and validate safety functions. Manage the lifecycle of safety-related systems. Perform complex troubleshooting and change control management. Develop, maintain, and enforce functional safety engineering standards. Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders, including Asset & Engineering teams, Projects, Generation Operations, Health & Safety, Security, Contractors, and OEM/manufacturers. Oversee safety management processes such as Management of Change (MoC), Communities of Practice (CoP), systems standardisation, Enterprise Technology collaborations, risk assessment and mitigation, and adherence to regulatory or industry safety requirements. We are looking for the for: Degree or higher qualification in Engineering with significant experience FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland) Certificate, Functional Safety Professional (TÜV SUD), CFSE (Exida), or higher qualification with functional safety experience. Knowledge of integrity and asset management principles, with a focus on functional safety systems. In-depth understanding of process and functional safety, including Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) and the application of IEC 61508/61511 standards. High level of industrial control systems knowledge desirable. Familiarity with process control and system optimisation/tuning desirable. Familiarity with generation cybersecurity principles, particularly as they pertain to safety-critical systems. Familiarity with electricity regulation governance and safety-related codes relevant to Mercury Generation products.
