Locations: In this role you can work from Remote, United States
Overview:
GitHub is changing the way the world builds software, and we want you to help! We’re looking for a Staff Software Engineer to join the Core UX organization and shape the foundation of GitHub’s UI platform.
More of the world’s development data lives on GitHub than anywhere else. Helping developers navigate, understand, and collaborate on that data is a core part of our mission—and we’ve only just begun to unlock its potential. We have high aspirations for making code navigation, comprehension, and collaboration seamless. At the heart of these efforts is Primer, our design system, and a growing ecosystem of shared UI components, which we’re expanding to empower feature teams to deliver exceptional user experiences.
In this role, you will help reinvent GitHub’s UI platform and infrastructure, working on everything from experience design to system architecture. Your work will include foundational elements like testing automation (e.g., visual regression testing) and paving scalable component adoption paths—from single-use components to shared elements that become part of Primer. You’ll help define patterns, architecture, and best practices to support highly scalable, highly available UI systems for GitHub's feature teams. Our wide range of feature experiences requires thoughtful design of reusable patterns, and you’ll play a key role in helping your team navigate uncertainty, anticipate challenges, and make effective tradeoffs through careful reasoning.
Together, we are creating the tools and products that are integral to how developers build software. We take pride in being thoughtful, intentional, and productive. We value learning, introspection, and reflection, and we’re always looking for ways to improve as a team and as individuals.
Responsibilities:
Work with the team to understand technical constraints and feature team needs, and develop, communicate, and track against realistic plans to consistently ship UI components, features, and bug fixes.
Coordinate with engineering, product, and design leadership to define and prioritize projects that help us meet business objectives.
Ensure the team builds software that is architecturally consistent and of high quality to reliably meet customer needs.
Support a highly available service used by millions of users daily, ensuring reliability, scalability, and maintainability.
Help cultivate an environment where team members are empowered and demonstrate a strong sense of ownership and belonging.
Help ensure that individuals on the team are learning, growing, and advancing in their respective careers.
Mentor, pair, and delegate work to encourage the professional and technical growth of your team and those around you.

Required Qualifications:
9+ years of experience in Software Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical discipline, with proven experience maintaining and delivering production software in languages including, but not limited to, JavaScript, Go, or Ruby
OR Associate’s Degree in a related field (e.g., Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Math, Physics) and 9+ years of experience in the same areas with proficiency in the listed languages.

OR equivalent experience
6+ years of experience working with Typescript, React, CSS, design systems, developer tooling, and Git
4+ years experience designing and implementing frontend libraries and build systems
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience defining and driving UI platform strategy, including design systems, component lifecycles, or frontend architecture.
Experience leading the development of internal frameworks or libraries for use across multiple engineering teams.
Experience improving frontend developer tooling (e.g., monorepos, build pipelines, CI/CD for UI, bundlers, observability, or test automation).
Experience working with GraphQL, modern frontend build tools (e.g., Vite, Webpack, esbuild), and server-side rendering approaches.
Passion for web performance, accessibility (WCAG compliance), and frontend observability.
Passionate about building delightful user applications with a consistent user experience across feature areas.
Strong communication skills, with experience collaborating across product, design, and engineering teams to align on technical decisions.
