Job Summary
We are looking for a strong network engineer to provide Level III network support, network and system change control, as well as maintenance and management guidance for NRTC member networks including core network routing and switching equipment, and ISP access layer gear. The network engineer works with a team of engineers to remotely administer member devices including Cisco, Juniper, Astria, VYOS, Unifi and PFSense equipment. The ideal candidate for this role is a network engineer who wants to grow their programming, systems, and security skillsets with a core focus on pushing packets.
Responsibilities
Lead the network team in designing, planning, and implementation of network infrastructure and architecture for NRTC internal infrastructure
Provide advanced technical support and assist junior members of the team in their support efforts
Establish and maintain best practices for the network team in support of our affiliates and their network environments (consisting of servers, workstations, firewalls, routers and switches)
Provide formal corporate communications on directional changes or changes that will impact existing services
Select and implement security tools, policies, and procedures in conjunction with the company’s security team
Monitor and maintain all levels of network security internally and externally
Design, implement, and support network environments for NRTC members, including troubleshooting and problem resolution for operating system and hardware issues
Support NRTC member change requests and conversions
Provide NRTC members with guidance regarding new technologies, networking best practices, and provide recommendations on appropriate network hardware
Provide support for engineering and professional services projects
Monitor and manage NRTC member network devices
Troubleshoot problems reported directly by customers and internal technical support teams
Perform change management activities, including performing firmware upgrades to production systems
Stay current on new technologies
Provide mentoring to junior level staff
Other duties and responsibilities as assigned
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Must demonstrate a collaborative mindset and the ability to work effectively in a team environment
Ability to learn and understand current and evolving technologies both at a high level and at a detailed level
Ability to communicate and problem solve efficiently and effectively with identified customers and IT personnel to ensure the implementation of accurate processes
Expert knowledge of all aspects of network including installation, management, application deployment, advanced routing protocols, and security
Advanced documentation and communication skills
Experience debugging bridged/DHCP-based networks (including Option 82 use)
Experience configuring and troubleshooting Cisco, Juniper, and/or unifi/vyos routers and switches
Layer 2 network design and debugging (including 802.1q VLAN work)
Layer 3 network design and debugging
Advanced eBGP and iBGP skills to include configuration design, implementation, load balancing, and troubleshooting
Ability to design, implement, and troubleshoot router and switch redundancy protocols (VRRP, MPLS, HSRP, GLBP, MC-LAG)
Experience configuring and debugging L3 VPN tunnels, Advanced ability to be proactive, detail-oriented, and self-motivated
Experience with automation, Netbox, Wireguard, Zabbix, Packetfence, Suricata, Docker, Python and Ruby are a plus
A deep understanding of anycast services is ideal
Opensource contributions are another considering factor
A deep understanding of hybrid cloud/datacenter operations
Understanding of cloud networking principles, including Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) architecture, transit gateways, security groups, network ACLs, route tables, VPNs, peering connections, and other networking concepts
Understanding, experience and history of working with RPKI in a production environment
Minimum Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred
Seven (7) years of experience managing network and server infrastructure, including troubleshooting, physical installations, modifications, replacements and configuration changes. Service Provider experience desired
Provable experience with the technologies listed, Show us your configuration/code
An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Physical Demands
Work is typically performed in a remote office setting
This position requires on call support rotation – 24x7 support
Occasionally travel may be required (5%)
