Director, Business Development
The Director, Business Development, reporting directly to the COO, is responsible for directing all business development activities of the CGLCC, along with expanding the CGLCC’s brand presence in the business community. The role is proactive and ensures consistent and regular outreach activities and communications, while driving revenue growth for CGLCC. Interested parties include, but are not limited to: corporate partners, the Canadian business community, regional chamber affiliates, Supplier Diversity industry partners, media, and government. The role’s purpose is to:
- Plan and direct CGLCC’s overall growth and expansion, targeted towards creating new business opportunities and partnerships;
- Formulate the business development strategy, which aligns with CGLCC’s strategy;
- Direct and supervise all business development activities to meet revenue targets, from forecasting and budgeting to the production and execution of business plans, which align to CGLCC’s strategic priorities and inform the Chamber’s business development operations;
- Gain and apply insight into developing business trends and translate this insight to plans that increase CGLCC’s brand presence and growth; and,
- Lead and develop an internal team of business development managers who develop and implement strategies in their respective areas to achieve CGLCC’s outreach and revenue goals.
CORE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Business Development
The Director, Business Development provides oversight for CGLCC’s entire range of business development activities, from developing strategies to create new business opportunities and partnerships, to acquire new partners and members, achieving or exceeding revenue goals and growing the CGLCC brand presence. Specific duties include, but not limited to:
- Develop and execute the business development plan to increase partner participation and revenue;
- Identify, evaluate and execute new business and partnership opportunities aligned with the CGLCC’s strategic direction;
- Work with the Business Development Managers in the application and execution of the overall business plan to their respective programs and markets, providing clear direction, accountability, coaching and support;
- Lead the recruitment, onboarding and transition to membership servicess with applicable partners on business development efforts, as required;
- Attend and actively engage in meetings, events and conferences to promote CGLCC programs and initiatives;
- Conduct and provide updates on the progress of business development initiatives against set strategic objectives;
- Monitor regulatory changes and ensure CGLCC is fully compliant with regulatory requirements related to the marketing of products and services;
- Monitor the CGLCC brand visibility and marketing progress against set strategic objectives;
- Develop strategies for membership and partner lead generation, monitoring and conversion, including reports showing lead generation success and failure rates;
- Mobilize internal CGLCC team members to support new and current business development initiatives, e.g. fulfillment of programming sold;
- Research partner & prospect needs and trends and use the information to inform the business, product and service development strategies;
- Act as an advisor to the whole organization on matters related to business development; and,
- Directly respond, solve and provide advice to daily operational and administrative issues related to business development.
Managing Relationships
The Director, Business Development builds and manages working relationships with CGLCC’s internal and external partners, helping these partners accomplish their program objectives and contribute to CGLCC’s strategic goals.
- Build and maintain open and effective communication with external prospects and ecosystem partners before, during and after key business development activities, ensuring satisfaction and retention and generating business opportunities;
- Builds and maintains effective working relationships with internal partners in the execution of business development activities and initiatives;
- Collaborate with internal partners to modify existing products and services to accommodate new partnerships and potential revenue streams;
- Maintain rapport with internal/external partners and team members to exchange or gather information to assist in high-level business development planning and day-to-day decision making; and
- Provide effective leadership to the Business Development Managers, towards engaging job performance and achievement of their individual program targets, providing them with the necessary resources, coaching and support.
Problem Solving & Ownership
The Director, Business Development analyses and solves problems and addresses day-to-day issues to ensure smooth and efficient operations and help establish a supportive and empowering work environment and contribute to the accomplishment of CGLCC program objectives.
- Develop and identify continuous improvement of all key business development processes, to attain high effectiveness and efficiency;
- Collaborate with Senior Leadership in the budgeting and development of CGLCC business development plan, and provide coaching and support to Business Development Managers in the development of their business plan specific to their program;
- Problem-solve complex business development scenarios, consulting with other CGLCC leaders, if needed;
- Resolve issues following CGLCC’s standards, practices and procedures;
- Manage internal, external and sometimes geographically dispersed resources; and
- Identify alternative solutions and select the best solution to the day-to-day issues and problems, ensuring positive impact on the process and/or relationships with internal and external partners.
CGLCC & Personal Advocacy
The Director, Business Development demonstrates personal leadership to fulfill the expectations of the role by taking ownership to personal development and assist in the development of others, guided by a strong commitment to the CGLCC mission and strategic direction.
- Ensure alignment of all business development processes and initiatives to the strategic direction of the CGLCC;
- Manifest engagement to CGLCC’s goals, strategies and values in the day-to-day behaviours and administration of these processes and initiatives;
- Seek performance input from managers and other CGLCC team members to identify own performance gaps and inform personal development plan; and
- Provide leadership, feedback and guidance to the Business Development Managers, ensuring they continue to be advocates of the CGLCC in the performance of their job.
DESIRED COMPETENCIES & EXPERIENCE
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, Marketing, Finance or related field; MBA designation an asset
Skills & Experience:
- 5-7+ years in a Leadership position in Sales or Business Development; previous experience as a Director of Sales or Director of Business Development preferred
- Experience in developing sound business development plans and strategy, including conducting market opportunity assessment
- Exceptional negotiation skills
- Must have functional sales forecasting skills and knowledge of basic financial ratios
- Knowledge of relevant products, services, distribution channels and segments
- Keen research, analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound planning and decision making
- Demonstrates integrity, credibility and dedication to organization’s mission and strategic direction
- Strong leadership skills with experience in leading a geographically-dispersed team that include managers
- Exceptional communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and to work with a variety of internal and external partners; highly developed presentation skills – verbal and written
- Previous experience working in a not-for-profit environment is preferred
- Experience working with the 2SLGBTQI+ community is considered an asset
- Proficient technology skills using program management software, Microsoft Office Suite and CGLCC administration tools (HubSpot, Sharepoint)
- Highly motivated, self-directed individual

Terms
This is a home-based, full-time position. Regular travel to events is required. This position reports to the COO, CGLCC.
Compensation
Salary will be based on skills and experience, within the annual earnings range of $85,000-$100,000. Additional benefits round out the compensation package, including group benefit plan coverage, annual vacation, and a generous public holiday schedule including paid time off between Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
