The COMPUTATIONAL METHODS IN SYSTEMS AND CONTROL THEORY group at theMax Planck Institute for Dynamics of Complex Technical Systemsin Magdeburg is inviting applications as Research Software Engineer (m/f/d).

The position is part of the “Data, Infrastructure, Software & Computing” team and intended to support both the SLICOT project and the software development in the third-party funded NFDI Consortia “Mathematical Research Data Initiative” (MaRDI), representing the field of mathematics and NFDI4Cat for the catalysis related sciences, in the German National Research Data Initiative (NFDI). MaRDI’s designated goal is to realize the FAIR Data Principles across the entire field of mathematics and its applications, while NFDI4Cat aims to bring together the various disciplines of digital catalysis. On the other hand, SLICOT is THE central Fortran library working behind most computational tools for systems and control applications. The two core developers are currently retiring from their posts and we are transitioning into a community maintained phase, modernizing the build system and passing the developer seats to the next generation.

We expect:

  • A master’s degree in mathematics / scientific computing / automatic control or a related field with grades above average,
  • Demonstrated expertise in at least two of the areas of Research software engineering,
  • Knowledge of control theory and related numerics and scientific computing,
  • Knowledge of model order reduction and surrogate modeling,
  • Ability to perform independent scientific software development, problem solving, and presentation of results,
  • Fluency in Python and Python workflows (incl. packaging) is mandatory for MaRDI,
  • Substantial knowledge of CMake is mandatory for the work on SLICOT,
  • Substantial knowledge in Fortran, MATLAB/Octave, Julia is helpful,
  • CI/CD in GitLab is highly desirable,
  • HTML/MediaWiki skills are optional.

  • Full-time position with fixed-term employment contract in the public sector with a term of two years. A prolongation for the period 2027–2031 is aspired.
